* lupercalia was a popular roman sex fest and love lottery held on february 15th which christians later attempted to overwrite by introducing st. valentine’s day on feb 14th. During lupercalia, revellers whipped each other to frenzy and fertility with februa – thongs – (from latin februare, ‘to purify’, from which the name of the month is derived).
