QUEER SELF-DEFENCE!
Would you like to go to Queeruption in California but just can't get there? - come to South London and do this instead! what you've all been waiting for: RADICAL QUEER SELF-DEFENCE! an intensive 2-day introduction and more.... for Freaky Gender-benders who tend to get turned on by fabulous mixed queer experiences. SATURDAY 6TH / SUNDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2001 please arrive promptly by 11am on saturday. bring (vegan) picnic-style food & juice to share. Try to get a good night's sleep on Friday - you'll want to be in good physical & emotional shape... the class *is* suitable for those with different abilities & health limitations - call us if you'd like to discuss your particular needs in advance. The workshop will include: role-play; fun games; verbal & physical exercises; basic self-defence techniques; lots of discussion, challenging gender-roles/ machismo/ hierarchy/ violence/ heterosexism/ the state and lesbo-homophobia..... This is designed as more than just a self-defence class: hopefully it'll be the beginning of much more.... eg the creation and nurturing of more mixed, radical, Queer community/ space/ political activity. Hopefully we'll be able to run more self-defence classes for Queers in future, and also start up some new projects after this - ideas so far include the Gender work-group; various plans for freaky/ genderfuck photography & film production; DIY sex-toy making & costume design; intergenerational exchange about the his/herstory of sex-politics Struggle(s) A delicious hot meal will be served in the evening so bring some £ towards costs (skipping crew needed - get in touch!). It'd be cool if everyone stayed in the venue on Saturday night (although if you *really* need to go home to feed the cats we'll understand!) We have a few cinematic delights for your (big-screen) pleasure on Sat. evening (other offers of films also welcome) and lots of fun group-bonding games to play... To join the Slumber Party, bring a sleeping bag, or more luxurious bedding, with you, and of course your favourite midnight snacks/ breakfast essentials. The workshop should be finished by 7pm on Sunday, but everyone's welcome to stay and socialise for longer, or even slumber again. There are a limited number of 'proper beds' that can be 'booked' (the rest of you will be on sofas, mattresses, padded mats etc.) with priority going to those with health reasons for needing them! If you're a woman, and aren't totally excited by a *MIXED* queer self-defence group, but definitely DO want to learn self-defence, do not fret... Women-only self-defence classes will be on offer again in the near future - for all levels from complete beginner up to those with more experience. Get in touch & leave your contact details if you'd rather do a women's class instead. It'd be helpful for us to have an idea of numbers before the weekend starts. So if you are interested, let us know NOW! (And numbers will be limited, so do register your interest as soon as possible!) And then please phone to CONFIRM your attendance by Thursday 4th October. NB: This workshop isn't a 'drop-in' one . All participants are requested to arrive on Saturday morning; the group will then be closed to latecomers. Obviously you can choose to leave at any time (and eg. come on Saturday then not on Sunday) but in the interests of group trust & safety, it will not be possible to join late (eg. skip Saturday and show up on Sunday). plus: The workshop is an intensive experience. It will not be suitable for children. Please make arrangements for your kids to be looked after elsewhere for the weekend. october 20th This year's Anarchist Bookfair is bigger. Because we've been so crushed into Conway Hall for the last few years, we've moved to a bigger hall: the Camden Centre. At the back of Camden Town Hall (opposite St Pancras Station) this time you'll have some space to see the books, stalls, videos and creche. The Bookfair is 100 metres from King's Cross tube. we plan to be there doing a discussion on all thing queer and fab!...so keep an eye out for us!
