Why Queeruption in Vancouver?

This will be the first Queeruption in Canada, and the first one since 2001 to take place in North America. We feel it’s important to take the event to different locations around the world, to make sure people from all over can attend. As well, we hope that Queeruption will inspire more activity and unity among radical queers, both in Vancouver and across Canada. We queers, freaks, radicals, anarchists, etc. are relatively few and spread out around the world. But when we come together at events like this, we’re able to see our potential to create change.

Vancouver sits on land historically inhabited by Coast Salish First Nations (aboriginal) peoples. As queers working to confront oppression, we want to use Queeruption as an opportunity to address issues of racism, colonialism and genocide, and to show solidarity with aboriginal people in Canada who are actively fighting against continued subjugation. It's our hope to examine racism and colonialism in Canada, and how this relates to other indigenous struggles and battles against racism throughout the world.

Also, we’re fortunate in Canada to still have large areas of natural wilderness that have not yet been destroyed by human intervention. Although we're organizing out of the City of Vancouver, Queeruption will take place primarily outside of the city, in a natural setting. We hope to make ecology and the environment a major focus of Q10, and examine the intersection between queer struggles and ecological ones. Also, the idea of hundreds of queers in nature is pretty fucking cool.
